The recently appointed CEO of Yahoo, Marissa Mayer's memo to all staff, decreeing that from June, they are no longer able to work from home and must be physically present at the office - is perplexing to say the least. Given she is a female CEO, and a new mother to boot, we tend to make an automatic assumption that she will support flexible, family friendly workplaces, and have an understanding of the demands placed on workers in this decade. But – from what has been reported in the press - apparently not. Her reasoning appears to be that in order to implement a cultural shift in the organisation - to become “one Yahoo”, it is necessary to be physically together – eyeballing each other over the water cooler, bonding in the canteen queue, and being creative in the car pool.   Read More . . .
